NORMAL, Ill. – Champaign native Voldy Makabu has achieved remarkable success during his debut season with Illinois State University’s track and field program.
Makabu, a former Chargers standout at Centennial High School, recorded three top-10 finishes at the IHSA state championships. He has now quickly adapted to collegiate competition as a Redbird.
At the Windy City Invite in Chicago, he cleared 2.12 meters indoors to claim first place. Outdoors, he jumped 2.11 meters at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, securing a third-place finish.
“His technique over the bar has improved dramatically,” said Illinois State head track and field coach Jeff Bovee. “His takeoff from the ground looks outstanding.”
Bovee expressed confidence that Makabu could clear a bar above seven feet before the end of his freshman year. “You can really see a big improvement in his consistency,” he added.
Recruiting Makabu out of Centennial, Bovee recognized both talent and potential. “He is still very new to the sport, yet he possesses incredible vertical ability,” Bovee said. “He loves competing and thrives on the challenge. When you combine those factors, you’re going to witness something special. It’s hard to predict how far he’ll go, but I know his sights are set on reaching the national championships in Eugene this year. He wants to be there now, and I believe it’s definitely possible.”
Illinois State is now preparing for the Missouri Valley Conference championships, scheduled for May 16-17 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
